The whau are flowering 🌼😃 One of Aotearoa's The whau are flowering 🌼😃 One of Aotearoa's unique botanic treasures, it was a delight to see it flowering. This unusual tree species is unlike any other in NZ with big, broad leaves and prickly seed capsules. It grows to about 10 m high and only lives for about 10 years. Many, many thanks to Jamie and Cheyenne from @docgovtnz for coming to check out a possible moth plant sighting in our children's forest today. Eeek, it is moth plant and we're so pleased the DOC team are ready and able to stop it strangling our planted kōwhai and search for the source plant. Some of these plantings are over 15 years old. Moth plant is a problem because it climbs to the top of native trees and smothers them, weighing them down and spreading quickly over large areas. Getting to them before they set seed in summer and autumn is so important. 🙏🙏#weeds #childrensforest #weedcontrol #protectingplants

That's a size 10 boot-rat! We're pleased to captur That's a size 10 boot-rat! We're pleased to capture this monster rat (our pick is a Norway rat) from the Waikawau wetland. It's a crucial time for our native wetland birds trying to nest and rear their chicks so we'll be increasing our rat trapping frequency and changing some lures and adding different traps to see if we can give them a helping hand this spring. 🐣🐤 #rattrapping #predatorcontrol #breedingseason

Hihi are so rare they only occur on predator free islands like Hauturu (Little Barrier) or in fenced sanctuaries where they've been translocated. We loved our recent visit to our friends at @visit_zealandia, what a wonderful chance to experience the bird and reptile life that should be thriving in Aotearoa.
