Fernbird count an indication of success

Our annual listening survey reveals Fernbird numbers in our Waikawau Wetland project remain stable, with numbers of other rare wetland birds on the rise.

The results from our recent bird survey in our Waikawau Bay Wetland Project are in. This year we heard 111 Fernbirds (a similar number to last year), as well as 8-10 Banded rail and 3-6 Bittern, which are extremely rare.

A local decline in fernbirds was what first inspired our Wetland project in Waikawau Bay, where Moehau Environment Group has been rodent trapping since 2006. As a consequence we’ve observed incredible increases in fernbirds and other birdlife in the estuary.
