Protecting kauri 💚 Thanks so much Te Ranga Wair Protecting kauri 💚 Thanks so much Te Ranga Wairua Trust for organising and hosting us and Habitat Tuateawa in this fascinating and important training session on how to test for kauri disease with Fredrik from Biosense. Our team appreciated the knowledge 🙏 and the chance to help protect this taonga.

🌿The pathogen infects kauri through their roots, impacting the tree's ability to transport water and nutrients to the leaves, and eventually starves the kauri tree.

🥾People and animals can spread the pathogen in soil so it's important to do our bit to keep boots and equipment clean of dirt and respect track closures.

📷Thanks for the photos fieldteamer Peri Mawson @peri_em, looks like an awesome experience working together to protect kauri

Excited to see this mātātā/fern bird come out w Excited to see this mātātā/fern bird come out while our field team were undertaking call count surveys of this nationally "at risk-declining" little bird at Waikawau Wetland. Our results are showing we are holding steady with 24 birds counted today at 11 of 16 sites around the wetland. We've had similar results for the last four years since starting the monitoring. We're always hopeful for increasing numbers, but thankful there's been no obvious decline. Predator trapping continues to help save this precious wetland bird!!

Volunteer weeding event! The Driving Creek Railway Volunteer weeding event! The Driving Creek Railway Conservation team and Moehau Environment Group are joining together with weed guru Richard Webster to tackle invasive kahili ginger. This weed forms dense patches of tubers that smother the ground and prevent native plants from growing. Come along for a few hours to lend a hand on Sunday 27 April, 9am -11am at Driving Creek Railway car park, Coromandel town or email info@meg.org.nz for details. Coffee afterwards thanks to DCR! There will be regular weeding events in Kapanga/Coromandel so if you can't make this one, we will let you know about future opportunities. A great chance to make a difference and new friends!

It's almost kiwi listening time! From May to July It's almost kiwi listening time! From May to July our volunteers will be dressing up warm and heading out into some spectacular spots to listen for kiwi calling. This year Moehau Environment Group is conducting a much larger survey than our usual annual monitoring sites. We aim to cover the entire area of our stoat trapping network from Coromandel town to Port Charles with over 50 listening sites. If you want to join in with this amazing event, and you have three evenings you can commit to the survey over winter (training provided), please email info@meg.org.nz

The survey helps us assess the effectiveness of our predator control. Twenty years ago, when an enthusiastic bunch of locals in northern Coromandel began Moehau Environment Group’s trapping network it was rare to hear kiwi, except in pockets of bush above the range of stoats. But now this mustelid trapping network covers over 16 000 ha and thanks to our trappers and the combined efforts of other predator control groups, Pare Hauraki, DOC, and anyone trapping in their backyard, the number and geographical range of kiwi are increasing. It is common to hear kiwi in our bush backyards of the northern Coromandel and in recent years they have even been seen close to Coromandel town at Driving Creek Railway. In 2023, estimated numbers and call rates were three times that of our early kiwi listening surveys.

I wonder how many we will hear this year?
Let us know if you want to be in the listening crew!
